The 1991 Gulf War
Unlike any conflict before, the Gulf War of 1991 played out in a brave new world of biological warfare. A round-the-clock television audience was captivated by the flying missiles that lit up the night sky. Canadian troops, sent abroad for combat for the first time since the Korean War joined the Allied forces to fight Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. On the surface, the occupation ended swiftly and decisively as the Iraqi forces retreated. But as was evident over the next decade, the problems remained unresolved.

The decision comes down after 4 a.m. The United Nations declares, for only the third time in its history, that force will be used against Iraq. All shipping in and out of Iraq will be stopped in an attempt to ruin Iraq's economy. Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein holds a news conference saying that an American invasion would bring "deadly consequence." In these television reports the crisis looms large as the two sides move further and further apart.United Nations sanctions use of force
• On Aug. 10, 1990, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney condemned Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein as a "criminal of historic significance." Without first seeking Parliament's approval, Mulroney announced that Canada will send the destroyers HMCS Athabaskan and Terra Nova and the supply ship HMCS Protecteur. Liberal opposition leader Jean Chrétien criticized Mulroney and called the move "absolutely unacceptable."• On Aug. 6, 1990, 230,000 American troops landed in Saudi Arabia to curb any potential expansion of the Iraqi invasion.
