Were we duped?

Broadcast Date: March 3, 1991

Before the war began, there was much ado about Scud missiles, Saddam's battle-hardened army, the threat of chemical weapons and a much needed New World Order. But as the war came swiftly and easily to an end, skeptics now question whether any of these threats described by the military and the media were in fact real. In this CBC Radio interview, military analyst Stephen Canby and journalist Richard Gwyn address the reality of the battle-exhausted Iraqi army, their Third World arsenal and the complete lack of military fight.

Were we duped?

• "On the one hand, you had a Third World army equipped with a mix of third-rate and some second-rate Soviet and French equipment. On the other side, you had the global superpower backed by two of the most militarily advanced nations in the world, namely France and Britain, and backed further by two dozen other countries. The notion that this war ever existed is pure fantasy, it was never a contest. It was absolutely certain that what happened to Iraq would happen." – Journalist Richard Gwyn.
