Several days after his tragic death in a car crash, Tim Horton's high-profile funeral is held on a sunny February day in Toronto. "The crowd that filed out into the harsh winter sun read like a 'who's who' of professional hockey," says the reporter in this 1974 CBC News clip. Horton's pallbearers are hockey greats Allan Stanley, Bob Baun, Dave Keon, George Armstrong, Dick Duff and Billy Harris. • The accident that killed Tim Horton occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Feb. 21, 1974. After a hockey game in Toronto on the night of the 20th, followed by a late-night meeting with his business partner Ron Joyce, Horton was on his way back to Buffalo (he was playing for the Buffalo Sabres at the time). His sports car hit a cement culvert near St. Catharines, Ont.• At the time of his death, there were 40 Tim Hortons doughnut shops in existence.
