Anne of Green Gables watch your back! Golf is P.E.I.'s newest darling. With stunning ocean vistas, lush green courses bordered by red sweeping dunes, and modest green fees, P.E.I. has become the new hot spot to golf. In this CBC Television report, Laurie Graham reports on a high-profile tournament being held on the Island. Restaurants are packed and hotels are booked up. • As of June 2005, P.E.I. has 25 golf courses.• According to golfpei.ca, golf generates approximately $85 million in revenues for the Island. Of that total, $68 million — or 80 per cent — is spent in non-golfing facilities like hotels, restaurants, etc.
• LPGA golfer Lorie Kane is perhaps the Island's best-known golfing ambassador. In 2005, she was featured in a PEI tourism commercial. "Before the LPGA, I started on PEI. I have played all over the world and I still love to get home and play my favourite courses," she said in the commercial. Lorie Kane is featured in this CBC Radio clip.
• In 2001 and 2003, Score Magazine rated P.E.I. Canada's number one golf destination.
• In 2004, P.E.I.'s provincial government extended the 10 per cent provincial sales tax to be applied to green fees. They expect to make $1.3 million per year with this change.
