Celebrating, Stampeder style

Broadcast Date: Nov. 24, 1968

The Calgary Stampeders are en route to Toronto. There, they'll play the Ottawa Rough Riders in their first Grey Cup game in 19 years. They have already shipped 1,000 white cowboy hats. And more than 100 chuck wagons and horses will greet the 3,000 Calgary fans expected for the game. The Calgarian enthusiasm is infectious. With fireworks, horses, cheerleaders, parade floats, chuck wagons and a whole lot of cowboy hats, who can resist?

Celebrating, Stampeder style

• Calgary's tradition of bringing the cowboy to the cup began in 1948 when Stampeder fans originally followed their team to Toronto for their first Grey Cup game. They did the unheard of, riding horses into hotel lobbies, partying in every corner of the city, and raising a hoopla that almost outshined the game. The party earned the Grey Cup a reputation as "the grand national drunk."
