East vs. West
Broadcast Date: Dec. 10, 1938
With 12 minutes to go, the Argonauts have pulled out from under the Blue Bombers lead of 4-3. Last year Toronto narrowly defeated Winnipeg - a big disappointment for the Blue Bombers, who wanted to advance their reputation as only western team to win the cup.But the West won't win today either. In this clip the final six minutes of the game are played out, assuring the Argonauts the Grey Cup of 1938, for their second consecutive win.
East vs. West
• The Argonauts won the game 30-7. In 1937, they had won 4-3.• Football started being broadcast nationally in the late 30s. This recording is the CBC Radio Archive's earliest recording of a CFL game.
• When the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (called the 'Pegs until 1937) won the Grey Cup in 1935, it was not without controversy. The team used seven American players, and the next year the Canadian Rugby Union ruled that players had to be living in Canada for more than a year before they could play in a Grey Cup. As a result, Winnipeg was banned from the 1936 game.
