Though he is still suffering from cancer at home in Port Coquitlam, B.C., there is good news for Terry Fox: he is to be appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honour. Terry becomes the youngest person ever to receive this honour.Terry Fox, C.C.
• The Order of Canada recognizes people who have made a significant contribution to our country.• There are three levels of membership in the Order of Canada: Member, Officer and Companion. There can only be 165 living Companions at any time who can use the letters C.C. after their name.
• Because of Terry's poor health, then-governor general Edward Schreyer made a special trip to the West Coast to bestow the honour.
• Terry received dozens of other awards: The Order of the Dogwood, British Columbia's highest civilian award; The Sword of Hope from the American Cancer Society; The Lou Marsh award for outstanding athletic accomplishment; Canadian of the Year from the editors of the Canadian Press; The first annual Terry Fox Gold Medal from Simon Fraser University, for students who show courage in the face of adversity
