When Laurie Skreslet reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1982, he thought to himself, "You're on top of the world." Skreslet was the first Canadian to successfully climb Everest. • Laurie Skreslet was born in Calgary on Oct. 25, 1949. He was 32 years old when he reached the peak of Everest on Oct. 5, 1982. • A number of other Canadians have successfully climbed Everest since 1982, including Sharon Wood, who in 1986 became the first North American woman to reach the top.
