Kevin Martin wins world curling gold

Veteran Canadian curler Kevin Martin has had countless victories, but a world championship win had always eluded him. In April 2008, however, the 41-year-old skip finally did it — he led his team to world championship gold. In this CBC Radio clip, Martin cheerfully tells CBC host Robin Brown all about the win. His next goal? A medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. "With two years yet to train and to get better, I think we have a real good shot at 2010," he says.Kevin Martin wins world curling gold
• Kevin Martin was born on July 31, 1966, in Killam, Alta.• His curling success began at a young age. In 1985, while still a teenager, Martin won the Canadian junior championships. The following year he won a silver medal at the world junior curling championships.
• He's nicknamed "The Old Bear" and "K-Mart."
• In addition to being a champion curler, Martin owns and operates a curling supply store in Edmonton called Kevin's Rocks 'n' Racquets.
• Martin's teammates in the 2008 world championship victory were John Morris, Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert (all shown in the photo accompanying this clip). This was the same team that went to the Olympics in 2010.
• Martin's hopes for 2010 came true, as his team curled its way to Olympic gold in Vancouver. After the gold-medal win, Martin said, "It was kind of a mixed bag of emotions from relief being one of the big ones and happy and excited, all mixed into one... And a little bit of disbelief, maybe, because it is such a lot of hard work and a lot of years to get there."
