Some advice from Norman Jewison

In this conversation with Stuart Smith, television director Norman Jewison discusses his early success in broadcasting. Appearing on the CBC-TV program Youth Special in 1961, Jewison offers advice for aspiring youth interested in breaking into the business.

Some advice from Norman Jewison

Youth Special was produced in Montreal in the early 1960s. It was a program for young people aged 18 to 24.

• Host Stuart Smith went on to earn his degree in medicine from McGill University in Montreal. His major was psychiatry.

• Smith entered politics at an early age, he withdrew his name from the Liberal nomination to Pierre Trudeau in Mount Royal, in 1965. He later moved to Hamilton, Ont. and elected as an MPP in 1975. He was elected leader of the Ontario Liberal Party in 1977, succeeding Robert Nixon.

• Norman Jewison was born in Toronto in 1926. His early success at CBC Television laid the foundation for his work in the United States.

• Jewison's first movie, Forty Pounds of Trouble was released in 1962, starring Tony Curtis. He would go on to direct 26 motion pictures including In The Heat of The Night and Jesus Christ Superstar.
