Canada Welcomes Prince Charles

From the moment he was born at Buckingham Palace on Nov. 14, 1948, the world has known his name. He's Queen Elizabeth's eldest son, heir to the British throne, and his personal life has been making headlines for decades. So naturally, whenever the Prince of Wales visits Canada, the CBC is there. Starting with his first Canadian tour in 1970, CBC Digital Archives presents a collection of radio and TV clips from Prince Charles's past visits to the Great White North.

1970: Prince Charles's first Canadian visit

Broadcast Date: July 15, 1970

It's the summer of 1970 and Prince Charles is in Canada for the first time. He's here with his family on a royal tour of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. The occasion? It's the centennial of the Northwest Territories and the 100th anniversary of Manitoba's entry into Confederation. In this excerpt from a one-hour CBC-TV special about the tour, we see the Prince of Wales in Manitoba enjoying a "trout festival picnic," meeting war veterans and native groups, and attending a rodeo.

1970: Prince Charles's first Canadian visit

• The royal family toured Manitoba and the Northwest Territories from July 5 to July 15, 1970.

• Prince Charles also spent a couple of days in Ottawa on his own (July 3 and 4) before joining the Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Anne in Manitoba on July 5. While in Ottawa, Prince Charles attended a Canadian Football League all-star game. According to a Globe and Mail article, he appeared to have had a great time. "By the time the game ended, it was nearly 4 a.m. in London, but the suntanned prince showed no signs of fatigue. He had never been in North America before, but he appeared totally at ease."
