In 1991, royal couple Charles and Diana make a return to Canada, but rumours of marital difficulty have keen-eyed royal watchers analyzing every move. Adding to the buzz, young princes William and Harry are in Ontario as well, making their first foreign visit with their parents. • Prince Charles, Princess Diana and their two sons visited Canada from Oct. 23 to Oct. 29, 1991. All of their destinations were in Ontario: Toronto, Sudbury, Niagara Falls, Kingston and Ottawa.
• In this clip we see Diana's dedication to visiting hospital patients. In 1991, the year of this visit, Diana lost a close friend to AIDS. In July of that year she caused a stir by hugging an AIDS patient at a London hospital, a gesture that was considered brave at the time.
• This 1991 royal visit was the last trip to Canada that Charles and Diana would take together. By that time royal watchers were saying that their marriage was essentially over. The royal couple separated in December 1992 and divorced in August 1996.
