1970: Prince Charles's first Canadian visit

It's the summer of 1970 and Prince Charles is in Canada for the first time. He's here with his family on a royal tour of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. The occasion? It's the centennial of the Northwest Territories and the 100th anniversary of Manitoba's entry into Confederation. In this excerpt from a one-hour CBC-TV special about the tour, we see the Prince of Wales in Manitoba enjoying a "trout festival picnic," meeting war veterans and native groups, and attending a rodeo.1970: Prince Charles's first Canadian visit
• The royal family toured Manitoba and the Northwest Territories from July 5 to July 15, 1970.• Prince Charles also spent a couple of days in Ottawa on his own (July 3 and 4) before joining the Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Anne in Manitoba on July 5. While in Ottawa, Prince Charles attended a Canadian Football League all-star game. According to a Globe and Mail article, he appeared to have had a great time. "By the time the game ended, it was nearly 4 a.m. in London, but the suntanned prince showed no signs of fatigue. He had never been in North America before, but he appeared totally at ease."
