An Ode to Mom

What is motherhood all about? For some, it's about keeping up with a crazy toddler. For others, it's the struggle with the ongoing stay-at-home mom versus career woman debate. And for others still, it's about simply becoming a mother — and undergoing any fertility treatments necessary to achieve that goal. There are soccer moms, famous moms, and moms of famous people; mothers with stories of tragedy, and mothers with stories of joy. In honour of Mother's Day, CBC Archives pays tribute to Canadian mothers from the 1950s to present day.

A daughter remembers

Broadcast Date: Oct. 16, 1996

In 1996, four years after the legendary Barbara Frum's death, her daughter Linda publishes a memoir called Barbara Frum: A Daughter's Memoir.

Sitting in her mother's lush garden in Toronto, Linda pays tribute to the remarkable woman with The Magazine's Hana Gartner.

Linda talks about her mother as the strong, pioneering female journalist who opened doors for women broadcasters.

She also remembers the passionate woman behind the tough veneer.

Linda muses about her mother's flamboyant fashion sense, her deep love of gardening and her enthusiasm for African art.

A daughter remembers

• Barbara Frum believed Barbie dolls were the "handmaidens of evil" and the "ultimate enemy of womankind." She refused to buy her daughter a Barbie doll. Then one day an As It Happens listener sent Frum an extraordinary collection of hand-made Barbie clothes. Her daughter Linda eventually got her doll.

• The CBC and the University of Toronto, Frum's alma mater, established the Barbara Frum Memorial Award in Canadian Scholarship in 1993. It's awarded each year to a student entering the first year of a graduate program doing research related to Canada.
