The Montreal Massacre
For 45 minutes on Dec. 6, 1989 an enraged gunman roamed the corridors of Montreal's École Polytechnique and killed 14 women. Marc Lepine, 25, separated the men from the women and before opening fire on the classroom of female engineering students he screamed, "I hate feminists." Almost immediately, the Montreal Massacre became a galvanizing moment in which mourning turned into outrage about all violence against women.

Shooting victim watches classmates' funeral
Broadcast Date: Dec. 11, 1989
Thousands of mourners gather today at Notre Dame Basilica for the funeral of nine of the 14 women killed at Montreal's École Polytechnique last week. One engineering student, shot three times by an enraged gunman, watches from her hospital bed as she recovers from surgery for bullet wounds. Nathalie Provost was shot in the leg, foot and temple. She sounds remarkably optimistic in this radio interview with the CBC's Michael Enright and says the ceremony will help her remember "the beautiful girls with high potential."Shooting victim watches classmates' funeral
• A Statistics Canada study conducted in 2000 found that violence inflicted by men (to women or other men) requires medical attention five times as often as violence inflicted by women (to other women or men). Also, women are nearly four times as likely to be murdered by their spouses than men are.• The weapon Lepine used, a Sturm-Ruger Mini-14, is a lightweight small game rifle mainly used by farmers to hunt vermin. Several North American SWAT teams also favour the weapon and it was used during the Vietnam War. Although it comes with a five-bullet magazine, a larger one can be attached. Lepine's held 30 bullets.
