The Eve of the Millennium

The CBC rang in the new millennium across all six Canadian time zones with star-studded performances, fantastic fireworks and multiple renditions of Auld Lang Syne. CBC Television's marathon 26-hour New Year's worldwide special, 2000 Today, was the most ambitious live project in the corporation's history. CBC Radio ushered in the 21st century with its 20-hour live broadcast, "Champagne, Moose and Maple Syrup."

It was great to see Air Farce again. I hope this is the beginning of a new trend of seeing our historic and creative comedians RCAFarce. Ron James was brilliant again and I loved his final message: Stay the course, take no prisoners, and cheer up - spring is only 7 months away!

Gearing up for the party

Broadcast Date: Dec. 31, 1999

While revellers at The Duke of Duckworth in St. John's get ready for Y2K with rounds of "dark and dirty" — double rum and coke — hundreds of folks, including pub owner Colin Dalton, will be working overtime to ensure everything runs smoothly. Dalton talks to CBC's Shelagh Rogers and Bernie McNamee about preparing for a shift that'll end around 6 a.m. local time — in the next millennium.

Despite feeling tense about the possibility of the Y2K computer meltdown, Dalton is in good spirits as he looks forward to this once-in-lifetime New Year's bash.

Gearing up for the party

• In this radio clip, Colin Dalton told CBC's Shelagh Rogers that he was wearing blue...as in blue underwear. It was a reference to a New Year's Eve tradition in Spanish-speaking countries of wearing various colours of underwear for good luck. Red is for love, yellow for work, green for money and white is for health.

• CBC Radio hosts Shelagh Rogers and Bernie McNamee kicked off the special 20-hour live broadcast, Champagne, Moose and Maple Syrup, starting at 6:30 a.m. PST. Avril Benoit and Bernard St. Laurent took over hosting duties from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. PST. Dick Gordon hosted the New Year's Day program starting at 6.a.m. PST with Rex Murphy hosting a special New Year's Day four-hour edition of Cross Country Checkup.
