The Calgary Stampede Parade of 1956

Broadcast Date: July 15, 1956

Indian chiefs, marching bands and plenty of horses kick off the 1956 Stampede parade. CBC Television is there to film the excitement as folks gather from all over to catch a glimpse of some of the best bronco riders, calf ropers and chuckwagon drivers competing in this year's Calgary Exhibition & Stampede. It's the annual tip of the hat to western heritage, and a time when "eastern views are out of place," says this CBC announcer.

The Calgary Stampede Parade of 1956

• In 1946, Patsy Rogers was crowned the first Miss Calgary Stampede. Two years later, two princesses were named to "attend" to the queen, completing what's known as The Royal Trio. The three women are chosen for their beauty, social skills, horse riding abilities and knowledge of the Calgary Stampede. The Royal Trio competition continues to be a popular event for Stampede goers.

• Over the years, celebrities including Cary Grant, Pierre Trudeau and Brad Pitt have all visited the Stampede.

• The Royal Family has visited the Stampede a number of times, including 1951, 1959 and 1973.
