Expodition: Soviet Week kicks off

Broadcast Date: Aug. 14, 1967

In 1967, it's not just Canada that has an important milestone to celebrate. In addition to being Canada's Centennial year, 1967 marks 50 years since the Russian Revolution of 1917. Moscow journalist Joe Adamov says his country has achieved much in those 50 years, and the Soviet pavilion at Expo 67 trumpets its technical and industrial advances.

Expodition: Soviet Week kicks off

• The International Bureau of Expositions granted the 1967 World's Fair to the Soviet Union in 1960, but the Soviets backed out due to financial concerns. Montreal then got the nod to host Expo 67.
• With 13 million visitors, the Soviet pavilion was Expo 67's most popular among the nations. Canada's was next with 11 million visitors, followed by the United States (nine million), France (8.5 million) and Czechoslovakia (eight million).
