Psychics predict the future as year 2000 approaches

Broadcast Date: Dec. 31, 1999

CBC's Shelagh Rogers and Bernie McNamee turn to a couple of psychics for a professional reading for the new millennium. Clairvoyant Claire (yes, that is her name) Brickus predicts that the next 1,000 years will be very positive. Astrologer Julie Simmons somewhat agrees saying she is optimistic in the long run. Simmons also has a personal prediction for McNamee who was born under the astrological sign of Virgo." Whatever you want, it's all yours," Simmons tells McNamee.

Psychics predict the future as year 2000 approaches

• In 1900, The Ladies' Home Journal published a collection of predictions by journalist John Elfreth Watkins Jr. He predicted air conditioning and direct-dial long distance telephone calls.
• A 1950 Popular Mechanics article predicted that future homes would have plastic furniture, rugs and floors that could be cleaned with a garden hose.

• Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, published in 1932, foresaw a world where everyone takes mood-enhancing drugs and babies are created in laboratories.
• "By the turn of this century, we will live in a paperless society."
— Roger Smith, chairman of General Motors, 1986.
