Venture

When Venture first launched in 1985, one stated goal was to be a TV version of the Wall Street Journal's front page: lively, lucid and wide-ranging. It's about business, but it's not just for businessmen and businesswomen. Venture covered all the aspects of the economy in Canada and beyond: prices, profits, personnel, innovation and ideas as they affect any business. From farms to fishing boats, boardrooms to barbershops, Venture was about the business of making a living. CBC cancelled Venture in 2007, after an amazing 22 seasons on the air. Twenty-three years after Venture's debut, the CBC Digital Archives focuses on the show's first season, under host Patrick Watson.

Max Ward sells Wardair

Broadcast Date: Jan. 22, 1989

In 1989 Wardair owner Max Ward surprises Bay Street by announcing the sale of his airline, the third largest in Canada. For decades the upstart airline was a decided challenge to the older established airlines. CBC reporter Linda Sims takes a look at the long, risky, exciting ride that has been the career of a bush pilot who made a name for himself in the world of international flight.

Max Ward sells Wardair

• Max Ward was born in Edmonton in 1921. He joined the RCAF in 1940, and was a flight instructor during the Second World War. When he returned to civilian life it was to work as a bush pilot in the Northwest Territories.

• Wardair was founded in Yellowknife in 1953, with a new de Havilland Otter as its first plane. Ward's company served the far north through transportation of heavy equipment. By 1962 he had added a DC-6A, which led to his expansion to international flights, and Wardair's fame as a charter airline.

• Max Ward has received many awards for his many contributions to Canadian aviation history, including the Order of Icarus and the McKee Trophy. He was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974 and is an officer of the Order of Canada.
