The National

This flagship 22-minute newscast debuted in 1956, just four years after CBC Television itself. In 1982, it was the first newscast to jump from the 11 p.m. to a 10 p.m. prime-time slot. Followed by a new show called The Journal, The National soon became "must-hour" viewing for over 1.5 million Canadians. But a 1993 gamble proved disastrous when Prime Time News replaced the show in a 9 p.m. timeslot. It was bumped back to 10 p.m. a year later and renamed The National in 1995. Its anchors number among the country's top journalists, including Larry Henderson, Earl Cameron, Stanley Burke, Warren Davis, Lloyd Robertson, Peter Kent, Knowlton Nash and Peter Mansbridge.

RCMP use Taser on Robert Dziekanski

Broadcast Date: Nov. 15, 2007

Reactions range from "outrage" to "heartbreak." The video footage of the last few minutes of Robert Dziekanski's life has just been released online and has quickly gone "viral." Millions of viewers around the globe are astonished by what they see. A month earlier, the RCMP used a Taser stun gun on Dziekanski to subdue him after he exhibited erratic behaviour, and the Polish man died. In this news clip from Nov. 15, 2007, we see how this viral video is prompting worldwide anger at how the RCMP handled the situation.

• For further information on Tasers, including details on other deaths that have been related to the stun guns, please see the CBCNews.ca backgrounder Taser FAQs. And for more on Taser use specifically by the RCMP, please see the CBCNews.ca backgrounder RCMP Taser use.

• A public inquiry into Taser use and the death of Robert Dziekanski began in Vancouver in May 2008. Known as the Braidwood Inquiry, the closing arguments were to begin on June 19, 2009, but were delayed after a surprising e-mail surfaced that showed the officers may have been discussing the use of a Taser even before they arrived on the scene, which would contradict the testimony they had already given. The inquiry was set to resume in September 2009.
