• The 1976-77 California drought, sometimes known as The Great California Drought, was the worst in recorded history. Parts of the state saw no rain for eight weeks and residents faced water rationing. Canadian-born California Senator S.I. Hayawaka advised Californians not to flush their toilets after urinating - "No pull for a pee" became a tongue-in-cheek state motto• The Sahara desert has expanded southward by 65,000,000 hectares since 1950. As the world grows warmer and drier, many deserts continue to grow.
• As of 2008, Australia was suffering its worst drought in 1,000 years, with some regions entering a 10th year of arid conditions.
