The Food Show

For 12 years, The Food Show took listeners inside the food business, exploring news and trends in food production, marketing and consumption. Beginning in 1978, host Jim Wright – a former circus ringmaster –navigated through the gastronomical gamut as listeners learned all about the food business. From important news to tips on camel-milking or microwave cookery, The Food Show offered a wealth of information on anything food-related. The CBC Digital Archives brings you some of the tastiest segments from the show's first season on CBC Radio.

A drying world

California's disastrous 1977 drought has finally come to an end, but signs of water shortage and climate change persist in other parts of the world. Desertification continues in Asia as the Sahara desert grows ever larger, and now Australia labours under drought. The Food Show's host Jim Wright gives a brief update on the global picture and possible effects of the drying world.

A drying world

• The 1976-77 California drought, sometimes known as The Great California Drought, was the worst in recorded history. Parts of the state saw no rain for eight weeks and residents faced water rationing. Canadian-born California Senator S.I. Hayawaka advised Californians not to flush their toilets after urinating - "No pull for a pee" became a tongue-in-cheek state motto

• The Sahara desert has expanded southward by 65,000,000 hectares since 1950. As the world grows warmer and drier, many deserts continue to grow.

• As of 2008, Australia was suffering its worst drought in 1,000 years, with some regions entering a 10th year of arid conditions.
