Sunday Report

This Sunday night news show prepared Canadians for the week ahead. The mandate of Sunday Report was to arm viewers with the information needed to understand the important issues that were developing in Canada and the world. Running from 1982-2004, the 30-minute magazine show mixed stories, interviews and panel discussions with short documentaries on politics, the media, culture and spirituality. Broadcast in six time zones at 10 p.m., anchors included Peter Mansbridge, Wendy Mesley and Alison Smith.

Toronto International Film Festival: a winning formula

Broadcast Date: Sept. 19, 2004

Some 100 world premieres and 26 international premieres put the Toronto International Film Festival at the top of everyone's must-see and be-seen list. But if some say the glitz threatens to overshadow the festival's substance, it's hard to argue with success. So what's the winning formula? Superb organization, multiple talented programmers and the fact that "Toronto understands the meaning of hospitality." Of course, a boatload of megastars and a bellwether audience doesn't hurt either.

Toronto International Film Festival: a winning formula

• While the Toronto International Film Festival does present juried awards, it is not a competitive festival like Montreal or Cannes. But the People's Choice award, which has been presented every year since 1978, almost always accurately predicts a hit. Past winners include: Chariots of Fire, The Big Chill, Le Déclin de l'Empire Américain, The Hanging Garden, Antonia's Line, Life is Beautiful, Shine and Whale Rider.

• This report aired at a moment of crisis for the Montreal World Film Festival (WFF). After a very public skirmish with the public funding agency in Quebec and Telefilm Canada, the festival lost 90 per cent of its funding in 2005. The public money went instead to The New Montreal FilmFest, which ran its first and only festival in fall 2005. WFF weathered the storm and, with funding restored, celebrated its 31st consecutive season in August 2007.
