The war in the Clayoquot woods is over
Broadcast Date: July 6, 1995

Forestry Minister Andrew Petter tells reporters that the government accepts a scientific panel's report to end clearcutting in the ancient rainforest in its entirety. Greenpeace views it as a huge victory, but spokeswoman Karen Mahon argues that if the ban on clearcutting "applies to Clayoquot, it should apply to the whole coast of B.C."The war in the Clayoquot woods is over
• B.C. Premier Mike Harcourt travelled to Brussels in 1994 to discuss the clearcutting controversy with members of the European Parliament in Brussels. He warned them that imposing a boycott on B.C. lumber would cripple the province's logging industry.• In 1999 an agreement was signed by MacMillan Bloedel and Greenpeace, allowing logging of the old-growth forest in Clayoquot Sound on a very limited scale.
• Aside from Clayoquot, the issue surrounding the Temagami forest served as one the biggest environmental controversies in Canada of the past 30 years.
