National Farm Radio Forum
On air from 1941-01-28 to 1965-03-29
It was radio that got farmers talking. From 1941 to 1965, National Farm Radio Forum brought together groups of neighbours across rural Canada to listen to a weekly half-hour program on a single farm issue. Using accompanying printed study guides, the groups then discussed the broadcast and sent in a summary for follow-up on a subsequent show. Launched as an educational experiment by the CBC, along with the Canadian Association for Adult Education and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the show's motto was: "Read. Listen. Discuss. Act."

Farm Forum: A national health plan
Broadcast Date: Nov. 2, 1964
In the first episode of its last season (1964-65), National Farm Radio Forum tackles a weighty subject: health-care coverage for all Canadians. A provincial health plan has gained wide support in Saskatchewan, and after conducting a royal commission, Justice Emmett Hall has recommended a similar plan for the entire country. Farmers, being self-employed, are at a disadvantage in the private system, but in B.C. and Ontario, they've banded together to start medical co-operatives with low-cost insurance.Farm Forum: A national health plan
• For a more complete picture of the introduction of public health care in Canada, see the CBC Digital Archives topic The Birth of Medicare.• The debate over public health care was the genesis of the long-running call-in radio program Cross Country Checkup on CBC Radio. It debuted in May 1965 and, as of 2008, is still on the air every Sunday.
