It was radio that got farmers talking. From 1941 to 1965, National Farm Radio Forum brought together groups of neighbours across rural Canada to listen to a weekly half-hour program on a single farm issue. Using accompanying printed study guides, the groups then discussed the broadcast and sent in a summary for follow-up on a subsequent show. Launched as an educational experiment by the CBC, along with the Canadian Association for Adult Education and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the show's motto was: "Read. Listen. Discuss. Act."

The Royal Commission on Health Services

Broadcast Date: Nov. 2, 1964

Encouraged by the widespread support for Saskatchewan's historic medicare experiment, the federal government begins to study the possibility of creating such a plan for all Canadian citizens. In 1964, the report from the Royal Commission on Health Services is tabled by Supreme Court Justice Emmett Hall. Known simply as The Hall Report, it recommends a joint federal/provincial system that would cover the costs of preventative health care services and hospital care for all Canadians.

• Emmett Hall was a classmate of John G. Diefenbaker, Canada's 13th prime minister, at the University of Saskatchewan's Faculty of Law. The Royal Commission on Health Services was initiated by Diefenbaker in 1961.

• In 1967, Emmett Hall was the sole dissenting vote when the Supreme Court upheld the 1959 murder conviction of Steven Truscott, who was convicted and sentenced to death at age 14. Truscott was eventually acquitted of the murder in 2007.
