Discoverer of acid rain looks back

Broadcast Date: June 30, 1991

"Our job was the hard science," says Harold Harvey. But even from the sidelines, Harvey watched acid rain morph from a small-scale scientific concern to a political power player. Harvey is pleased to see an end to the 10-year political battle, though it has been a much longer battle for him, having discovered acid rain more than 25 years ago.
In this interview with CBC Radio's Peter Gzowski, Harvey shares his perspective on the trials and triumphs of stopping acid rain.

Discoverer of acid rain looks back

• According to Harvey, the term acid rain was first used in England in the 1800s, by "her Majesty's purveyor of alkali works. This fellow was measuring pH of rain in industrial midland's of England, really an introduction to meteorology."
