Funding for faith-based schools defines 2007 Ontario election

Broadcast Date: Oct. 7, 2007

With his emotional swipe at the media – "There are real issues out there!" – NDP leader Howard Hampton sums up his frustration with the 2007 Ontario election campaign. The issue of public funding for faith-based schools, a proposal put forth by Conservative leader John Tory, has come to dominate the campaign, and although Tory later amended it with a promise of a free vote, the damage has been done and it looks like an easy re-election for Dalton McGuinty's Liberals. This CBC-TV report reminds voters that McGuinty came under criticism at the start of the campaign for implementing a health tax, after he had promised during his successful 2003 campaign not to raise taxes.

• The Liberal party won 71 of 107 seats, the Conservatives took 26 and the New Democratic Party won the remaining 10. The Green Party did not win any seats but managed to achieve eight per cent of the vote share.

• John Tory stayed on as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, despite his loss in his own riding of Don Valley West. He resigned in March of 2009, after losing a crucial by-election, and was succeeded in June of that year by Tim Hudak, MPP in the Niagara region since 1995. He served in the cabinet under Premiers Mike Harris and Ernie Eves.

• Howard Hampton won his riding of Kenora-Rainy River, but resigned as leader of the NDP in March 2009. He announced in July 2011 that he would not seek re-election as an MPP in the upcoming election. His successor is Andrea Horwath, who has served as a Hamilton area MPP since 2004.

• McGuinty's Liberals won yet again in 2011, but their majority was reduced to a minority with 53 seats, one shy of the 54 needed for a majority. The Progressive Conservatives under Hudak won 37 setas and the NDP took 17.
