Showdown

Starting in 1974-75, Showdown added a fresh twist to CBC's Hockey Night in Canada telecasts. This intermission feature presented innovative competitions featuring current and former NHL superstars. Lanny MacDonald, Johnny Bower, Börje Salming and Chico Resch are just a few of the hockey greats competing in the 1978 series of one-on-one matchups and mini-games featured here. Offence or defence, old-timers or current greats, Showdown has something for all hockey fans.

Does anyone know the name of the song that was played at the beginning and at the end of Showdown.

Good clip, but there's a mistake in your write-up. It says that one team has Dionne, Lapointe, Rogie Vachon and Rogie Vachon. I imagine that's a mistake; it doesn't seem likely that there are two Rogie Vachons in the league

3-on-3: Game 1

Broadcast Date: April 19, 1978

This new Showdown 78 feature pits mini-teams of NHL stars on a small ice surface with no slapshots or bodychecking, allowing for maximum display of hockey skill. It's a fast-paced offensive showdown as The Sweathogs - Rick MacLeish, Börje Salming, Wayne Stephenson and Lanny MacDonald - take on the Fatcats, made up of Marcel Dionne, Guy LaPointe and Rogie Vachon, in the first of a two-game series.

3-on-3: Game 1

• Aside from his accomplished play, Börje Salming is also remembered for enduring one of the most gruesome injuries in hockey history. In 1986, Detroit's Gerard Gallant accidentally stepped on Salming's face during a tie-up in front of the net. Salming needed 250 stitches to close the wound.

• Rogatien (Rogie) Vachon joined the Montreal Canadiens partway through the 1966-67 season to serve as a backup to Gump Worsley, but ended up playing the bulk of the team's playoff games that season, backstopping the Habs to a Stanley Cup finals appearance. He and Worsley shared the Vezina Trophy that year as the league's best goaltenders.

• Rogie Vachon not only drafted Marcel Dionne for this Sweathogs team, but acted as his official manager eight years later. After retiring, Vachon served as general manager of the Los Angeles Kings, the team Dionne played for. Frustrated by the club's struggles during the 1986-87 season, Dionne demanded a trade and Vachon shipped him to the New York Rangers.
