Howie Meeker Hockey School

Howie Meeker Hockey School changed the way kids learned Canada's game. From 1973 to 1977, CBC Television captured the lessons and spirit of the school with four seasons of Howie Meeker Hockey School aired on the full network. Truly one of the greats of the game, the former Toronto Maple Leaf brought his incredible knowledge of hockey and endless enthusiasm as a coach to players, coaches and fans across the country. In 15 minute-long episodes, Meeker puts a class of young skaters in St. John's through their paces, teaching the fundamental skills needed to play hockey. The CBC Digital Archives spotlights 19 full episodes spanning all four seasons.

It's one of the sins of hockey — coaches take their worst skater and put him in net. But the goaltender needs to be one of the best skaters on the team, guest coach Buddy Blom tells Howie Meeker. In this 1974 episode all about goaltending, drills like the crossover teach the boys "good balance on blades," while the "side glide" and "two-legged slide" start building the skills goalies need to make the big save.

• Goaltender Buddy Blom, a native of Stratford, Ont, played Junior B and A hockey including a stint with the Hamilton Red Wings when they won the Memorial Cup in 1961-1962. After playing for the University of Colorado, he suited up with the Detroit Red Wings for four years. Since then he's coached amateur and college hockey for over 30 years. In 2008, he was an assistant goalie/defensive coach for the triple-A Colorado Thunderbirds.
