Broadcast Date: Jan. 30, 1977
"Most good defencemen are made, not born," says Howie Meeker in the introduction to this rough and tumble episode on stopping the attacker. With the right skills, he says, any boy can learn what it takes to beat the forward 99 times out of 100. Here, Meeker gets the kids going one-on-one to show them how to check, block the slot, lead the attacker off course and skate him out of rink.Howie Meeker Hockey School: Deft defence
• One of Howie Meeker's lessons in this episode instructs kids playing defence to never look at the puck, but instead look at the attacker and just see the puck with their peripheral vision.
