Howie Meeker Hockey School: A new season, new skills
Broadcast Date: Sept. 20, 1974
"When thought waves are involved in performing the skills … the boy is not ready to play hockey," says Howie Meeker in the opener of his second season on CBC Television. Surveying the year ahead, Meeker keeps the focus on basic skills, but the lessons aren't just for the kids. Coaches also come in for some instruction — and ribbing — from the spry, no-nonsense coach. In a quick lesson on checking, Meeker even takes a tumble to illustrate his point.Howie Meeker Hockey School: A new season, new skills
• In this clip, Howie Meeker says it's possible to teach any boy to "pass as well as Big Gordie," a reference to Hall of Famer Gordie Howe. Also known as Mr. Hockey, Howe played professional hockey for more than 35 years, including an astonishing 25-year career with the Detroit Red Wings.
• Meeker and Howe played against each other throughout Meeker’s career, including the Stanley Cup finals between the Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1948 and 1949. Toronto prevailed in both series. In 1972, the Red Wings retired Howe's number (9) and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
• In the opening of this episode, Meeker emphasizes the importance of sticking to basics by recalling that "the Russians came over and taught us a lesson." The reference is, of course, to the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey series. In that match-up, Canada expected to walk all over the Russian hockey team, but instead lost three of the first five games, winning the series only in an eighth game cliffhanger.
