Queen surfs CBC Archives website

The Queen takes a look at the CBC Archives website during her visit to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Oct. 10, 2002. She smiles while watching a television clip of the 1959 Calgary Stampede. It shows the young Queen sitting in the crowd with Prince Philip, who is wearing a large white Stetson cowboy hat. The Queen also views archival footage of her opening the Canadian Parliament in 1957.

She is especially pleased to hear the website footage, presented by Sabrina Saccoccio and Paul Gorbould (left), appears in both French and English.
The Queen, touring for her Golden Jubilee, arrives at the Toronto headquarters as CBC television marks its 50th anniversary. Wearing white gloves, she extends her hand to greet Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps and various CBC personalities — Gordon Pinsent, David Suzuki and Knowlton Nash — who have been preparing for her visit.

The Queen wears a stunning emerald and diamond tiara that matches her green beaded gown. Prince Philip accompanies her, stopping often to speak to the crowd. He quips to two young women, "Shouldn't you young people be at home watching your programs?" implying it would be more fun than watching the royal visit. The Queen leaves the building on the final stretch of plush red carpet, accepting each bouquet of flowers offered to her by onlooking children.

• Walking with Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, CBC Chair Carol Taylor introduced the Queen to the new media presenters. The Queen approached the display to inquire, "And what is this, exactly?"
• While watching the archival footage, the Queen was told the website documents CBC radio and television clips from the past 70 years in both French and English. Sounding surprised, she responded, "In both languages?"

• Prince Philip appeared especially intrigued once he realized the clip of the 1959 Calgary Stampede depicted him, more than 40 years earlier, wearing an oversized cowboy hat.
• At the CBC, the Queen also met other CBC personalities, including Roger Abbott, Michelle Tisseyre, Tommy Hunter, Mary Walsh, Bernard Derome and Brian Williams.

• The Queen and Prince Philip spent approximately 30 minutes in the building, from where they went on to a concert at Roy Thomson Hall. The concert, hosted by Colm Feore, included performances by Cirque du Soleil, The Tragically Hip and pianist Oscar Peterson.
