Hugh Macdonald Gainsford has a personal Centennial project. As the last living descendent of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister, Gainsford has gone to the birthplace of his great-grandfather: Glasgow, Scotland. Gainsford finds the room Macdonald was born in 1815 and learns its history from the current occupant. • Sir John A. Macdonald emigrated with his parents from Scotland when he was five years old. They settled in Kingston, Ont. Macdonald became a lawyer and entered politics in 1843. In 1867, having negotiated the British North America Act in London, he was appointed Canada's first prime minister. He died in 1891 aged 76.
