A weekday in 1938
Despite the Great Depression and a brewing war overseas, in 1938 Canadians still managed to laugh and create music for the world to hear.
The schedule below is a composite of regular CBC programming and specials that were broadcast in 1938. The CBC's radio archives for 1938 are sparse, as are program guides for the 1930s; a 1939 CBC program schedule was used as the basis for the following grid. Most of the programs listed below were nationally broadcast; others were heard only on local stations such as CBL in Toronto, CBO in Ottawa and CBY, also in Toronto.

Thousand Islands Bridge
Broadcast Date: Aug. 18, 1938
Canada and the United States, friends and allies for many years, have strengthened their bond with a new bridge linking the two countries. On the northern banks of the St. Lawrence River, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King welcomes U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at a dedication ceremony for the Thousand Islands Bridge. CBC Radio captures both leaders' speeches, in which they emphasize the friendship between the nations and the opportunities afforded by the new span.Thousand Islands Bridge
• The Thousand Islands Bridge connects Ivy Lea, Ont., and Collins Landing, N.Y. It consists of five sections totalling 13.6 kilometres.• A sod-turning ceremony for the bridge, attended by thousands, took place on April 30, 1937. The bridge was completed in just 16 months.
• In 1959 the bridge was twinned to accommodate larger traffic volumes.
• About 2.2 million people crossed the bridge in 2002.
• While in Canada Franklin Roosevelt also received an honorary degree from Queen's University in Kingston. War in Europe seemed imminent, and in his speech Roosevelt pledged that the United States "would not stand idly by" should Canada be threatened by another country.
