A Monday in 1965

In the fall of 1965, Canadians were gearing up for the federal election at home, and following Rhodesia's fight for independence abroad. On the radio dial, a new educational program made its debut. The critically acclaimed show called Ideas would become the longest-running show currently still on air at the CBC.

CBC's Alex Trebek brings us the news this Monday, Oct. 25, 1965. Canadian peacekeepers in Dominican Republic, Rhodesia's struggle for independence and the Nov. 8th federal election headline the news. At the time of this newscast, Trebek, who joined the CBC in 1961, has gained a reputation as a broadcaster known for his poise and composure.

• Lester Pearson and his Liberals won a second consecutive minority government in the Nov. 8, 1965 federal election.

• On Nov. 11, 1965, Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe) declared its independence from British rule.

• Dominican Republic was in the midst of a civil war in 1965.

• Alex Trebek is best known as the long-time host of the popular award-winning U.S. television quiz show, Jeopardy. He has received two Emmy Awards as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work on Jeopardy.

• Trebek was born in Sudbury, Ont. He graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Philosophy.

• Trebek hosted the CBC game show Reach for the Top from 1966 to 1973. In 1973 he moved to the United States to host a new game show called The Wizard of Odds. In 1984 he was chosen to host the revived version of the trivia game show Jeopardy.
