The theme of this year's Saint-Jean-Baptitste parade is 30 years of quiet power. CBC Radio reporters line the festive parade route to gauge the opinion of the revellers. A relieved post-Meech mood settles over the city. "It's a recommencement of the an atmosphere of joy," says one exuberant woman. But across the city in Chinatown, the mood is glum and Quebecers ponder the future of Canada and their place in la belle province. • June 24, 1995 was the actual Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day but rainy weather delayed the celebrations. Nonetheless, a number of Montrealers celebrated in the streets waving their fleur-de-lys flags merrily.• After the failure of Meech Lake, polls suggested that 60 per cent of Quebecers would back sovereignty in a referendum.
• Saint-Jean Baptiste-Day is a statutory holiday in Quebec. The day honours St. John the Baptist, the Patron Saint of French Canadians.
