Caribou slippers for Prince Charles

Broadcast Date: Oct. 26, 1951

Finding just the right gifts for Princess Elizabeth's children is on everyone's mind during the 1951 royal visit. In Saskatchewan, there's a crisis: caribou slippers have been promised to Prince Charles, but none can be found!

• Caribou are a type of deer of the same species as reindeer. Inuit in the Arctic have traditionally depended on them for food and clothing.
• You can see a caribou on the back of most Canadian 25-cent coins.
• Stony Rapids (where the slippers were found) is a fly-in community in northern Saskatchewan. It has a population of about 250.
