Cooking for men

Cooking school host Pearl Geneen says men are the best students. They're not used to being in the kitchen, and that makes them eager to really practice at home what they've learned in cooking school. In Toronto, Geneen gives cooking lessons to 21- to 60-year-old men.

Many women have gone to work these days meaning husbands must share in the domestic work.

Others, who are bachelors, just want to impress their girlfriends, says Geneen in this CBC Television clip of Luncheon Date with Elwood Glover. The affable Glover is befuddled by the concept: "That's strange: A bachelor who wants to impress his girlfriend would learn how to cook."

Cooking for men

• Elwood Glover's Luncheon Date was on the air from 1963 to 1975.
• It had an earlier life as a radio program in 1956 on Toronto's CJBC. In its first season on CBC Television, the program ran simultaneously on radio.
• When it started, the hour-long TV show was interrupted by an American soap opera. Luncheon Date began for 30 minutes at noon (EDT) and then 30 more minutes at 1 p.m.

• The interview show was broadcast out of Toronto's Four Seasons Hotel near the corner of Jarvis and Carlton streets. The hotel was conveniently located across from the CBC building.
• The program also shot on location at Expo 67 and the Canadian National Exhibition.

• Glover had a knack for making his interviewees feel comfortable. Toronto columnist Edna May said he didn't try to be smarter than his guests and he just sat there "looking somewhat like a grey-haired cherub and talking in a friendly way to anyone from doctors to strip-teasers."
• Glover interviewed 11,500 guests over the years. Stompin' Tom Connors and Lena Walsh got married on one of his shows in 1973.

• Glover hosted his last Luncheon Date on June 27, 1975. He asked to quit the show and joined Toronto radio station CKEY a few months later. Glover died in 1990.
