"People aren't as soft as we like to think they are, " Algonquin Park outfitter Dave Wainman tells CBC Radio as he describes how more and more people these days strap on a pack and aim for the interior by canoe. But "roughing it" isn't quite what it used to be. While the portages still aren't marked with neon lights, Wainman says modern wonders like plastic wrapping and dehydrated food make tripping simpler and more luxurious.No neon for Canada's oldest sport
• The canoe was selected as one of the Seven Wonders of Canada by CBC viewers and judges in 2007.
• Algonquin Park was established in 1893 as a wildlife sanctuary and covers 7,630 square kilometres in northern Ontario. Its landscape inspired some of the greatest paintings by the Group of Seven.
