Will heavyweight Krispy Kreme step on Tim's toes?

Broadcast Date: March 20, 2002

It's 2002 and doughnut fever is in the air! Krispy Kreme Donuts has recently opened its first Canadian store in Mississauga, Ont. The response has been unbelievable. Lineups are extremely and consistently long, but Krispy Kreme addicts don't seem to mind waiting for their fix. But now, there's a burning question on everyone's minds: how will this affect Canada's reigning doughnut king, Tim Hortons? This 2002 clip from CBC's Marketplace explores the Krispy Kreme/Tim Hortons faceoff.

• The Mississauga, Ont., location of Krispy Kreme opened in December of 2001. Over the following few years, a total of 18 Canadian locations opened.

• Despite the initial hype surrounding Krispy Kreme's entry into Canada, the American chain didn't have much of an impact on Tim Hortons's supremacy in Canada. In fact, by 2005, all but six of the 18 Canadian stores that had opened in Canada had closed. As a 2005 CBCNews.ca story wrote, "The lineups and the media buzz are gone, and so are most of its stores. Krispy Kreme, which entered Canada with a bang, has shrivelled to a half-dozen doughnut stores."

• In 2008, there were still six Krispy Kreme stores open in Canada, three of which are in Quebec. Pre-packaged Krispy Kreme doughnuts can be found in some Loblaws, Wal-Mart and Petro-Canada locations across the country.
