Slimming down and toning up

Broadcast Date: Dec. 27, 1963

After Christmas, everyone tends to put on a few pounds thanks to all those yummy holiday treats. But according to fitness expert Kim Mahood, the sooner you start exercising, the easier it is to get back in shape again. In this 1963 CBC-TV clip, Mahood discusses the main problem areas for women and demonstrates a few simple exercises a woman should do daily in order to maintain her figure. "Remember: you've got to exercise every day," she advises. "Don't overdo it, and good luck!"

• A 2000 study by the U.S. National Institute of Health tried to measure just how much weight the average American puts on over the holiday season. The study found that the average weight gain from late September or early October to late February or early March was 1.05 lb. Most of that weight gain – about 0.8 lb. – was gained during the six-week period between American Thanksgiving (in late November) and New Year's Day.
• This 2000 study was considered a "good news/bad news" story. The good news was that results showed a lower average holiday weight gain than researchers had initially expected. The bad news, however, was that very few people had lost their holiday weight a year later, and the cumulative effect of gaining a pound each winter and not losing it can be very unhealthy.
