Telescope: Dr. Jim Leeson

Broadcast Date: March 2, 1971

Between removing a young lad's tonsils and delivering a baby, Dr. Jim Leeson sees it all. A country doctor with the common touch, Leeson will take the variety and personal contact of a rural practice over those city specialists any day. That's not to say he's out of touch, mind you - the old Air Force pilot regularly flies himself to conferences and training sessions to stay up to date. Telescope does the rounds with Leeson and gets first hand look at his thriving Wiarton, Ont., practice.

Telescope: Dr. Jim Leeson

• James Leeson enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force to become a fighter pilot during the Second World War. However, by the time his training was complete, the war was over. Instead, he pursued his interest in medicine, graduating from the Air Force medical school in the mid-1950s.

• In 1958, after writing to the mayor of Wiarton, Ont., and receiving a warm welcome, Dr. Leeson relocated to the town with his wife and two daughters to start his medical career. They had a third daughter after moving to the town.

• After 38 years in Wiarton, Leeson moved his practice to nearby Sauble Beach. He retired from full-time practice three years later, in 1999.
