Summary
Using a variety of Web-based resources, students will research current information to determine what has happened in the Air India investigation since 2005. They will deliver their information using a multi-media presentation.
Duration
2 to 3 lessons
Purpose
To investigate and report the events that have taken place in the Air India investigation since 2005; to prepare and deliver a multi-media presentation
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Since June 2005, various initiatives have occurred to further investigate the Air India crash of June 1985. In particular, former premier Bob Rae completed a report that was “…dedicated to the memory of those who died at the hands of terrorism on June 23, 1985, on board Air India Flight 182, and at Narita Airport, Tokyo, Japan.” The mandate of this report was as follows:

The mandate is to provide independent advice to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness on whether there are outstanding questions of public interest with respect to the bombing of Air India Flight 182 that can still be answered given the passage of time and sets out the options for addressing any such questions.

Outline the Opportunity
Students will perform research to learn the content of the report and its recommendations. They will present their findings in the form of a multi-media presentation to the class.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students share their presentations and discuss their opinions about how government has followed up on the investigation. Do they believe that every possible effort has been expended? What do they think about the costs of the investigation? How do they think the families might now feel about the current status of the process? As a class, students can write a letter to government to seek information about its current approaches to terrorism.
