Summary
In this introductory activity, students explore the topic to learn more about Joe Clark and how he became prime minister of Canada.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To gather information about a former prime minister of Canada
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Have students work in pairs to brainstorm and record what they already know about Joe Clark. Each pair should post its ideas and share them with the class.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students watch and listen to the clips Young Joe Clark and An honourable member, including the Did You Know? section, on the topic The Man from High River: Joe Clark on the CBC Digital Archives website. In their original pairs, students will outline the events that led Clark to seek the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party. Students can also browse the topic for another 10 minutes to discover other details about Clark.

As students review the various clips, they should look for answers to the questions found on the download sheet Joe Who?

Assessment Tip
Use the download sheet Joe Who? to assess student understanding of Clark’s character traits by noting the quantity and quality of the supporting examples/evidence.

Revisit and Reflect
Gather as a class and create a list of all information students discovered. Invite students to discuss what they have learned about Clark. Have them reflect on how a relatively unknown person can provide leadership to a national political party and eventually rise to the highest political office in the country.
Extension
Students can listen to Running for the leadership on the topic site and discuss with a partner, or reflect in their journal, the role of leaders in shaping a political party.
