  • Lesson Plan
    Before Exploring
Have students examine the national flags of a number of countries, from print, electronic, or other resources. While doing this they should try to identify the symbolism of these flags and describe the specific items on the flags that convey meaning about that country.
    Outline the Opportunity
Have students visit the topic site to gather as much information as they can about the Great Flag Debate of 1964-1965, and about the various flags and symbols discussed. Students will then design their own version of an alternative Canadian flag for the time period. Students should consider whether they want to indicate any reference to Britain, and how they will reflect Canadian identity as recognized in Canada and around the world.

Using a scale ratio for width and height of 2 to 1, students should create their flags and describe and explain any symbols used.

    Revisit and Reflect
Have students present their flags to the class, and explain how their symbol choices embody Canadian identity. Hold an informal debate as a class, discussing which flag would have best represented Canada in 1964-1965, and attempting as a group to choose a “winning” design.
    Extension
Interested students can create a personal or family flag. It should have symbols specific to the individual or family. Post completed flags in the classroom and have students try to identify which person or family each flag represents.
