Summary
Students write a fact sheet of the significant physical events of the worst tsunami on record, the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To examine the impact of the Indian Ocean tsunami on December 26, 2004
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Using a map outline of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding countries, have the students locate and label the eight countries identified in Clip #8, the Did You Know? section, page 2 on the topic Canada’s Earthquakes and Tsunamis on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Students may need to use an online map of the region to find the specific locations.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to Clip #8, including the Did You Know?, section on the topic Canada’s Earthquakes and Tsunamis on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. As they review this clip, students will create a fact sheet of this physical event. Students should have 10 facts on their list.
Revisit and Reflect
Invite students to share the facts they learned. Have a class discussion on the human effects of this tragedy. With a loss of life of over 100,000, what other effects did this tsunami have on humans?
Extension
Students can write a narrative, imagining that they are a tourist standing on the beach in Thailand watching the ocean disappear and then seeing the wave approach shore. They may want to use a sentence starter such as: “I survived the tsunami but... .”
