Duration
3 lessons
Purpose
To write a profile of a public figure

Before Exploring
June Callwood was one of Canada’s most recognized magazine journalists and social activists. She helped found over 50 organizations and worked tirelessly for all causes that have touched her heart. Despite the tragedy and controversy that touched her own life, she continued to act as Canada’s conscience.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will research and write a profile of June Callwood. They can begin by examining the format of profiles from online and magazine sources. As a class, summarize the structure of a profile.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students hand in their completed writing package (notes, outline, draft, and good copy). As a class, students can discuss how their writing differed from the broadcasts they watched. Students can reflect on how they chose the material they wanted to convey and how they conveyed it in print. Consider making students’ finished profiles available in the classroom.
