Write the term “Canada’s conscience” on the board. Ask: Why might someone be described this way? What character traits do you think someone has who is described this way?

Direct students to the topic June Callwood: Canada’s Conscience on the CBC Digital Archives website to research the political involvement of June Callwood, the changes she was trying to make around her, what motivated her, and the effects of her involvement. Students use their research to write a brief report that ties together her work as a journalist and as an activist. The report should use formal language and be written in third person. It should include a summary to capture the reader’s attention and explain the purpose of the report, a body, a conclusion, and headings. Remind students to follow the stages of the writing process.

After completing the drafts of their reports, have students discuss what Callwood believed to be the meaning of life: “Be kind to each other.” How did she show this philosophy in her manner and in her actions? Have students peer-edit their reports and complete their good copies.

Callwood said that the measure of success is not being too disappointed in yourself. Students can write in their journals what they believe to be the measure of success.
