Political Science
Summary
In this introductory activity, students gather information about the personality, political career, and importance of Ed Broadbent as a voice from the left in Canadian politics.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To gather and analyze information and share impressions of a significant contemporary figure in Canadian politics
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to name some important contemporary figures in Canadian politics and the political parties with which they are associated. Ask them if they have ever heard of Ed Broadbent, the federal leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from 1975 to 1989, and if so, what they know about him. Record student answers on the board.
Outline the Opportunity
Divide students into small groups. Provide them with the download sheet Who Is Ed Broadbent? and assign or have students choose two or three questions per group. Have students browse the topic Ed Broadbent: A Voice from the Left on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site for 20 to 30 minutes, taking notes to answer their questions.
Revisit and Reflect
Using the information they have gathered from browsing the site, have students answer their questions in the form of a discussion. Together, have the class prepare and present a brief summary of the main points arising from the discussion. Alternatively, create new groups that include someone from each original group, and have each person share the information his or her original group found.
Extension
Students can write a brief report evaluating Ed Broadbent as a figure in contemporary Canadian politics, focusing on what they regard as his main achievements and failings.
